Change is the only constant thing in life. Although it does not happen all the time, it could be a tedious task to adjust to one. Sometimes, people have to make little or major changes to their date of birth (DOB), phone number, or names on BVN.
This is not unusual, as the reasons always vary. The reason could go from genuine BVN linking issues with several banks to malicious attempts to evade authorities. This is why bank officials are skeptical when customers come with this request. This article will guide you on how to avoid BVN linking issues. Also, how to effect a change of DOB, phone number, or name on BVN in Nigerian banks.

It is only prudent to make sure your details are the same in ALL your bank accounts and your BVN, this is to avoid account closures, account freezing, and other issues. You can make changes to almost everything on your BVN – your names, date of birth, email, phone number, and so on. You cannot change your picture though. However, you must have a VALID reason for changing your DOB, phone number, or name on BVN. Without this, no one will listen to you, there are a lot of fraudsters out there.
NB: Only the bank that enrolled you initially has the right to update your BVN details. If you enroll for BVN in Bank A and you go to Bank B for an update, you will be turned back!
There are a few valid reasons one could be required to effect a change of DOB, phone number, or name on BVN. For these different reasons highlighted below, there are different requirements to effect a change of name, date of birth, or phone number. Don’t worry, I’ll take them one by one:
Spelling Errors
If at the point of initial registration, your name was misspelled by the operator, it could mean a huge issue for you – the customer. For instance, if “Peter” is spelled as “Petr”, this can be regarded as an obvious spelling error which will be treated as a low-risk transaction by your bank.
Requirements
- A valid government-issued ID (international passport, drivers’ license, voters card, or national ID). This is all you need. You will be made to present the original copy, this would be verified, and your change will be effected according to what appears on your ID.
Marriage
For females who are required to change their last names to their spouses’
For females who got married and now have to change their last-names totally, or revert to a compound name, their requirements are more robust. This is because, evidences must be shown for the said reason.
Requirements
- A valid government-issued ID (international passport, drivers’ license, voters card, or national ID). The ID card must be valid.
- Your marriage certificate
or
A notarised/court affidavit stating that got married to a spouse who’s last-name you wish to effect a change of name on BVN to.
- A newspaper publication, notifying the general public that you are now changing from your maiden name to your spouse’s name because of marriage. This publication can be done at any of the national dailies. Go to the bank with the original to show it is genuine
- An instruction to effect the change of name on BVN
Change of faith
e.g, David to Ismail
If you have recently changed your faith e.g Islam to Christianity, or vice versa, you might also be obliged to change your name because it no longer reflects your new spiritual self. The bank understands that.
Requirements
- A valid government-issued ID (international passport, drivers’ license, voters card, or national ID). This MUST be in your new name, arranged in your desired order.
- A newspaper publication, notifying the general public that you have effected a change of name and a brief reason.
- A written application to effect a change of name for on BVN you. The reason, also, must be clearly stated.
NB: This reason is regarded as high-risk because males are not expected to change their names all their lives.
Discovery of new information
If you just got wind of a discovery of something new, which renders a standing information false, then you need to effect a change of name on BVN to avoid BVN linking issues. BVN problems can be frustrating. Personal details like date of birth or name spelling are very personal and important. Thus this must be made correct and consistent in all your banks.
Requirements
- A valid government-issued ID (international passport, drivers’ license, voters card, or national ID).
- An evidence showing genuine reason to effect the change of name on BVN e.g, birth certificate, a court-sworn affidavit
Loss of registered phone/Trade Monitoring System Portal issues (email update)
If you registered initially with a phone line, and that particular phone is not with you anymore because you lost the number and cannot retrieve it, you have the right to change the phone number to whichever phone number you are currently using.
Also, the new portal introduced by CBN – the Trade Monitoring System Portal for Form A, PTA/BTA require that you must have an email attached to your BVN. If you want to add/link your email to your BVN, follow the instructions below.
If you reside outside Nigeria, the best thing to do is to contact your bank/account officer for assistance. You will likely have to receive a form to print, fill, and scan back to Nigeria for processing. The same processing time of 24-48 hours apply.

- An instruction stating the new phone number/email to effect the change of name to change to.
*565*0# issues
As we know, the universal code to get your BVN right on your registered line (*565*0#) only works for you if your registered line has been used for ONLY ONE registration. This means one BVN can only be linked to only one BVN.
If the phone line is linked to MORE THAN ONE BVN, that is it, you cannot use the code to get your BVN anymore. Unless, of course, you change it and avoid all BVN linking issues or problems altogether.

Loan application issues
Most microfinance companies scrutinize all their borrowing customers thoroughly, even to the last detail – your phone number. This is why people run down to their banks with urgency, they hate to have anything between them and their loans!

Changing from your ‘Married Name’ Back to your Maiden Name
First, I’d like to say that this is not an unusual situation, and it is absolutely doable. This is for some women who were once married to their spouses but situations changed, and now there’s a need to revert to their father’s name (as it were before).
Requirements
If you wish to change your last name from your husband’s (married) name to your father’s (maiden) name, you will require to take the documents below to any branch of the bank where you enrolled for the BVN for the update:
- A valid government-issued ID (international passport, drivers’ license, voters card, or national ID) that carries the proposed maiden name.

This is for Nigerians in the diaspora who have BVN problems, who wish to effect a change of name, date of birth, or phone numbers on BVN too. Simply contact your bank/account officer and avail your documents as appropriate. The bank would review this and treat credible requests, and update your detail.
FAQ
Can I have two BVN with different names?
No. You can only have one (1) biometric verification number in a lifetime, as proscribed by the Federal Government. If you wish to update your name(s) on your BVN, follow the steps above.
Can I change my BVN name?
Yes, just follow the steps you have above and get necessary requirements.
Can I change my BVN name in any bank?
No. However, you can walk into any branch of the VERY bank where you enrolled for the BVN for an update.

From your explanation, I understand that your govt-issued IDs carry your old name. This issue is not unusual.
The ideal situation will be for you to have your new names on ALL your IDs/documents. If you have an NIN prior to marriage, I will recommend that you update your NIN, as it’s the easiest to update for now.
To update or change your name/date of birth/other details on NIN, do the following;
1. Go to Remita NIN Biller Page
2. Choose the correct category, enter your email, other details, and submit
3. Generate your RRR
4. Pay via the RRR in a bank
5. Take the payment advice, old NIN, newspaper publication, and marriage certificate to your nearest NIN Office to effect the change.
Thereafter, once your new details have been effected, take the NIN with the new details to your bank for the BVN name update.

Like I said earlier, newspaper publication is usually needed when a major update is requested. No one will ask you for a newspaper publication if you are simply trying to rearrange your Names or correct a spelling error.

You can rectify this issue in this order below:
1. First, you must get your NPC Birth Certificate and a sworn affidavit stating the error.
2. Then proceed to the bank where you enrolled for the bvn to apply to correct dob.
3. Then visit any NIN office near you to effect the dob update with NIN (should cost around N15,000 (officially). Just visit them.
4. Update all your bank accounts to the new date of birth.

I will suggest that you go back to your bank and ask for your ‘BVN Verification’ page. Your registered phone number would be displayed there.
If what you have there is the correct and current phone number and the challenge persists, then your bank has to notify their IT dept to correct that.

This issue is very rare. The dob on your ‘validation‘ page is likely different from the dob on your ‘verification‘ page. Ideally, those two portals mirror each other, but sometimes things go south.
It’s a glitch that the bank of enrollment need to report to their dedicated BVN Team/IT Dept for a resolution. Do you have any compound names?

The update now takes a maximum of 24 hours to reflect. Truth is, your bank is yet to initiate the update from their end. They should do that.

The requirements for this sort of update are your divorce papers, except you have another strong reason you want to stop bearing your husband’s name.
Can BVN number be changed, because someone else has my BVN number and he is using it without my consent.
BVN is not changeable or transferrable. All you need to do is ensure the protection of your bank account e-channels and your registered phone, you should be safe.

Total name change is a very delicate transaction to deal. If you have given a valid reason as stated, try to contact your bank again to know exactly what the delay is about.

Walk into any bank and ask them to check for the bank of enrollment for you

I gave them Ilesanmi and they mis spelt as Ilasanmi.
Went to court for Correction of name and submitted to the bank with NIN and still no correction.

Hi Gbenga, I did my BVN in London some years ago. I don’t think that place is there anymore. When I came to Nigeria, at the bank it was discovered that my name, Anthony was spelled wrong as Anothony. Please what do I have to do because I went to open account in Zenith Bank and they wrote my name as Anothony. I’m not comfortable with that at all.

If your enrolment was not done by any specific Nigerian bank, you can fill a modification form with a bank of your choice in Nigeria, and attach your ID. The bank can assist to liaise directly with NIBSS and get the misspelt name corrected.

I will recommend that you try to remove your middle name on your NIN. This will leave you with just two (2) names.
Here’s the process flow to remove your middle name from your NIN: 1. Go to Remita.com 2. Select the correct name update category and generate your RRR 3. Take the RRR to any bank to pay 4. Take the RRR receipt to any NIMC office for re-capturing/update 5. Allow a 30-day period for the update to take effect OR request for an expedited action from the NIMC attendant.
Once the NIN has been updated to carry just 2 names, take your NIN to your BVN bank-of-enrollment to update same.

Hi Gbenga, Can I have two different accounts with different surnames bearing the same BVN? This is as a result of marriage. My current job pays me with an account bearing my Maiden name with the same BVN. But, I want to change my name in another back to apply for a new job. So, if I change my name on my BVN to my marriage name, will I still receive my pay from my salary bank bearing my Maiden name. Kindly help.

Hi, please have been to 3 of access bank branches for a total name change on my BVN, I submitted all the necessary documents they ask for and it’s almost a year now that I’ve been checking back for an update on the name. It’s yet to be rectified and when I ask for what the delay is they said they are waiting for NFIU from CBN. Please how long those this take ? Or how can I fast track it
Your reason for the total name change must be convincing enough for the bank. If it looks like a fraudulent transaction, the bank will not treat.
